Packaging optimisation for award-winning cosmetic tube

Kneipp, manufacturer of body care and health products, is taking another step towards sustainability with its cosmetics packaging. Together with the Swiss tube manufacturer Permapack, Kneipp has already realised the Paper Tube 2021, which was awarded the "Tube of the year 2021" in the area of sustainability by etma. After a limited edition at the start of the project, Kneipp now fills almost its entire hand and foot cream range in Permapack's paper tubes. The tube casing consists of a paper composite with a 71 per cent share of cardboard or cellulose, which gives the tube a special paper feel and look. This cardboard content consists of 100 per cent virgin fibres from sustainably managed forests (FSC or PEFC certified). With the further development of the “Tube of the year 2021”, now Kneipp and Permapack are taking another step towards sustainability in tube packaging. A flatter PP closure is now placed on this very same paper tube with a 35 mm diameter and 75 ml capacity. The smaller cap has a big impact: up to 19 per cent of material can be saved. Extrapolated to the sales volume of Kneipp brand hand creams from the year 2022, the changeover to the paper tube and the flatter cap in combination means a saving of around 9 tons of plastic per year. The first hand and foot cream tubes with the new resource-saving caps are already on sale.
